A Dry White

This photo is the opening shape for my new piece (for Pairings). Inspired by the crisp balance of flavor of a dry white wine, the dancers are quickly moving in and out of lifts, weight shares, falls and balances. I’m especially excited by this piece, because I feel like it was quite a stretch for me artistically. From the time I chose the wine I’d be choreographing for, I’ve felt quite nervous as to whether or not I could capture it’s essence. I don’t know if I have, I’ll leave that to you to decide, but I am happy with the result and the fabulous execution by my dancers.

I’ve really enjoyed this process, and I marvel a bit at how inspiring a wine can be! By giving me a starting point that was quite removed from my comfort zone, this process has had me delve into movements and ideas I would have not considered had I had a completely blank canvas. Starting with a rough sketch, so to speak, we’ve filled in the movement over the last several weeks, adding layers and depth.
