Not having an abundance of experience as a choreographer, I am discovering a lot about my tendencies and challenges as I work on my Cultivate piece. The main thing I’ve learned is that I tend to get caught up in the details of the movement from the very start, which makes for really slow progress. I’ve realized that it’s better – at least when your rehearsal time is limited! – to throw the choreography out there, give the dancers a chance to digest it, and focus on getting the basic skeleton of the piece together before worrying too much about the details.
This is a challenge for me, since I’m a very detail-oriented person. It’s a blessing and a curse, in art as in life!
